Getting ready for that summer feeling? You should be doing the same for you vehicle. Our Yonkers Nissan dealer is ready to give you the lowdown on how to prepare your car for the warmest and jam-packed months. Whether you’re planning to go on a summer road trip, or just simply down the shore, we have the knowledge you need to plan ahead and make the trip a successful one. Read on to find out what you need to do to maximize the fun this season.
Prepare for the following:
Cooling System- Overheating can be avoided with a complete flushing of the cooling system and refill about every 24 months. Periodically check the level, condition, and concentration of the coolant too. Remember to never remove the radiator cap until the engine has been thoroughly cooled and get the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses checked by a pro.
Air Conditioning- Inspect the system for worn or damaged belts before the system fails. Explore the fins to make sure they are clear of debris and make sure nothing it obstructing the condenser because the refrigerant is able to do its cooling job better that way. You can get a great inspection at our Yonkers Nissan service center. Check out our air conditioning check-up special!
Summer Tread- Use summer tires on your car to get more speed, better handling, and a better fuel efficiency. You can do that at a shop or if you’re seasoned at changing tires, try it yourself. If you prefer all-season tires, those are a good alternative as well.
Brake Check- Inspect your brakes because when the summer brings on rain, you want to be as responsive as possible. Depending on whether you have disc or drum brakes, you’re inspection will differ. Take it to a mechanic if your not sure what you’re looking for and be sure to check the state of your brake pads. Your break pads can wear more quickly in the summer heat.
Towing- If you insist on bringing the boat, camper, or trailer on your summer trips, make sure you inspect your car and trailer for towing weight maximums, load distribution, safety chains, and working lights.
Don’t Overload- Make sure weight is evenly distributed.
Be Prepared for Children Mishaps- Bring snacks, extra clothes, and entertainment.
Keep A Clear View- Make sure packing does not interfere with your proper line of sight.
Ready The Roof Rack- Know the rack’s weight limit and know the new height of your vehicle to prevent damage or accidents.
Know The Route- Plug in your route for a summer trip into your GPS before leaving.
Oil- If you plan on taking extended trips with lots of luggage or tow a trailer, you may want to change your oil and oil filter more often (every 3,000 miles). To start, check your manual for a normal frequency.
Engine Performance- Replace your filters like air, fuel, PCV, etc. as recommended for more dusty conditions. Stop by our shop for any engine drive-ability problems. We’ll take care of any hard start, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, or anything else that doesn’t seem right.
Windshield Wipers- Increase your vision and safety with a clear windshield. Clean it with a washer solvent and remember to replace worn blades. Your eyes will thank you for it.
Lights- Check all lights and bulbs to clean dirty ones and replace burned out bulbs. You’ll need all of these to work for your safety and the safety of others on the road.
Battery- Get a professional to check out your battery. Routine care should also be addressed. If battery caps are removable, check the fluid level monthly. Make sure you wear eye protection and rubber gloves to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. If you do this yourself, scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections, clean all surfaces, and re-tighten all connections.
Emergencies- Pack basic emergency supplies like a first aid kit, flares, and a flashlight. Ask your technician for some helpful suggestions to add on to your emergency pack.
